The historic complex Huize Padua in Boekel has a history in mental care dating back to the early nineteenth century. It was here where the first mental institution in the Netherlands was formed. A boskamer (an open space surrounded by trees) has been opted for as expansion with a Forensic Psychiatric Clinic. The new clinic is a large, secured building complex that accommodates 72 patients and around 150 members of staff. The multi-purpose building is situated at the new access road and offers 96 parking spaces in front of the building. At the rear, the residential and service buildings are situated in parallel strips in the middle of fenced outdoor areas. The basic principles such as clarity, light and a pleasant and safe working and living environment with a friendly atmosphere have been key considerations in the design. The elongated multi-purpose building of two levels offers an organising principle in the form of a central ‘street’ and accommodates the treatment area, the service area and entrance zone. The three residential buildings are low-rise. The outdoor grounds include a courtyard, a market garden and sports area, among other things. Each residential building contains two residential areas and a space for social-therapeutic staff. All residential areas have extremely spacious walled outdoor accommodation. The service building accommodates the reception area in combination with the medical department and in the centre the separation department with four cells. Expansion with a second service building is possible. Materials used in the building complex are ‘clean’ prefab concrete, steel, aluminium and glass and will have a distinguished light appearance, both inside and outside. By virtue of the strict security requirements, the largely glass facades of both the multi-purpose building and residential areas are fitted with bars inside and out for anti-breakout purposes. These interface facades in combination with increased daylight ingress (also from above) do to a great extent determine the outward appearance of the Forensic Psychiatric Clinic, Huize Padua.
